Gullet Quarry

Worcester Divers control diving at the Gullet. To gain permission to use for diving, please contact us by the Contact Us page or phone 07906 987789 (Answerphone - please leave your contact details).

You must also inform the Malvern Hills Conservators' Head Warden, Richard Vale on 07768505278 & inform him of the activity so that Richard is kept aware of what's happening within his jurisdiction.

Situated  at the South Eastern end of the Malvern Hills, Gullet Quarry is the ideal place to check out kit or test your low-viz skills e.g. Navigation and Search & Recovery.  Viz can be OK down to 4 metres, but is zero if you kick up the muddy bottom. Max depth only 4 metres (after lots of rain). Usual depth 3 metres.

Access to the water should be made via the grassy slope at the southern end rather than by climbing the wall and using the old roadway under the cliffs at the northern side.

Directions
Grid ref: SO 760380
Lat: 52deg 02.24min N (52.0399)
Lon: 02deg 21.05min W (-2.3513)
From Welland take the B4208 south towards Gloucester.  You enter the open area of Castlemorton Common.  At the end of this straight section of road, turn right jst before the phone box (Spot Height 66 on the OS map).  If you pass a pub, you have gone too far.
Carry on along this narrow road for 3/4 mile until there is a junction where the main road  bends left and drops sharply down hill. Spot height 133.   The car park is on your left.  Park here then, with your kit, walk straight on (not down the hill to the left) past the two barrier posts.  The road ends in 100 yards at a what was a small car park.

See the Multimap link for further info. Look for "The Gullet" just to the south of Swinyard Hill
or Microsoft Map Point

Geocaching
If you are interested in Geocaching (an international web-based organisation of "treasure hunting"), we have placed one in the quarry called "What's in your Gullet"
(You will also find one in Stoney Cove called "20,000 Leagues Under The Pub")

Warning
The area is used by many people. Lock your car.  Use shore cover to keep an eye on other users as well as the divers.

Depth Marker
On behalf of Malvern Hills Conservators, we have placed a depth marker in the Gullet to try to warn swimmers of the dangers. See our Trip Report
