Gullet Depth Gauge
Worcester Divers have proved that Gullet Quarry is not bottomless, by installing a depth gauge. A request was made by the Malvern Hills Conservators to build and locate a depth gauge to try a dissuade people from swimming in the quarry and jumping from the cliff edges.
The project was managed by Steve Fulcher and helped by Robin Welford, Dave Salt, John Cuthbertson, Dave Brace and Simon Yates.
The mooring weight arrives at Gullet. Weighing over 300Kg it required some careful handling.
Inevitable comparisons with bouncing bombs – just how would it skim across the water?
Lifting bags a barrels fully inflated allows Dave, John and Simon to swim the weight into position. In all it took nine 25kg bags to lift the weight. With the weight finally in the right position, the lifting bags are deflated to sink the weight to the very muddy bottom. In conditions of zero vis, the team remove all of the lifting bags.
